Plaintiffs Rene and Ernest Casadaban are the proprietors of a large nursery business near Abita Springs in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. In the summer of 1964, the Casadabans purchased a herbicide known as Dacthal 75 for weed control on approximately twelve acres of their property, being the portion of their operation devoted to growing azaleas.
