The grand jury of Avoyelles Parish returned an indictment on May 17, 1973 charging that Newton Gaspard attempted to murder his wife on February 17, 1973 by cutting her with a knife. After pleading not guilty he was tried by a jury of twelve, found guilty as charged and sentenced to serve five years in the custody of the Louisiana Department of Corrections, with credit for time served.
