We hold that the directed verdict was proper on the ground that the evidence established that plaintiff was contributorily negligent as a matter of law.

Plaintiff's evidence, considered in the light most favorable to her, tended to show: On 24 March 1972, she lived in a rural area on the east side of U.S. 220 and had a garden on the west side of the highway. She had lived in the immediate area for fifty-one years. The pavement of the highway...
