Among the Everglades on the south shore of Lake Okeechobee lies Hendry County, Florida, a largely rural polity whose 13,000 residents include whites, blacks, Hispanic-Americans and Seminole Indians. On July 9, 1970, the United States filed suit in federal district court to desegregate the Hendry County public schools.
