STAFFORD, J.

On the afternoon of April 23, 1970, plaintiffs-respondents' son was killed. The car he was driving collided with defendant-appellant's short-haul, nonscheduled locomotive as it crossed a well-traveled highway outside the city limits of Yakima, Washington.

At that time, a driver who approached the crossing from the south, as decedent did, would have had his view to the west obstructed by houses and trees...
