Defendant was charged with two counts of aggravated assault (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1971, ch. 38, par. 12-2(a)(1)) and two counts of armed violence (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1971, ch. 38, par. 33A-2). All four counts arose out of the alleged firing of a handgun at two police officers.
