On July 31, 1962, while employed by defendant firm, plaintiff suffered amputation of the middle, ring, and little fingers when his right hand was caught in a metal-shearing machine. He returned to work September 26, 1962, but was paid specific-loss benefits for 71 weeks by the State Accident Fund. Plaintiff continued to do the same work until he retired in 1966 at the age of 62.
