The plaintiff, Robert Matthews, is an inmate confined to a maximum security cellblock at Louisiana State Penitentiary. On June 9, 1971, while on his way to the shower, he was attacked and beaten by another inmate. The attacking inmate had gained access to a glass jar which was used to beat and cut the plaintiff.
