This case arose from the 1969 trial of the so-called "Chicago 7," five of whom were found guilty of violations of the 1968 Federal Anti-Riot Act (18 U.S.C. § 2101) after a four and a half month jury trial.1 At the conclusion of the trial, the trial judge, acting under Fed.
