Martin Slate and his fellow plaintiffs brought this action pursuant to 42 U.S.C. § 1983, seeking damages under the First Amendment for the refusal of defendants William F. McFetridge, Daniel J. Shannon and Thomas Barry, among others, to grant them a permit to use Chicago Park District facilities for a political rally during the week of the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
