On December 20, 1968, the appellant pled guilty to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and to four counts of armed robbery in the Richland County Court of General Sessions. His sentence provided that "James McLamore be held to labor upon the public works of Richland County for a period of nine years or be confined to hard labor at the State Penitentiary for a like period."
