Plaintiff suffered from a severe skin ailment, lupus erythematosus. From October 1954 to January 7, 1960, at the prescription of her doctors, she took chloroquine diphosphate, a drug manufactured and distributed under the name Aralen by defendant Winthrop Laboratories, a division of Sterling Drug, Incorporated.
