On March 28, 1968, a bright clear morning, plaintiff Judith Pederson, then 17 years of age, her mother, plaintiff Dora LeTourneau, and a neighbor, Mrs. Marlene Steffen, set out from their homes near Deer River in Mrs. LeTourneau's car for Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
