On August 6, 1969, Dorothy Bryant, Mary Frierson, Beverly Young and Rosalie Boehme brought this class action against John C. Montgomery, the then Director of the Department of Social Welfare, State of California. Montgomery has since been succeeded by Robert Martin, and he, by Robert B. Carleson.
