The petitioner (the mother) was an unmarried woman, twenty years old at the time of her child's birth in October, 1969. She had lived with her parents (a police officer and his wife) in New Hampshire, until it was discovered that she was pregnant. Then, because she and her parents "weren't speaking together," she left home to live with her sister, also in New Hampshire.
