At the May 1971 primary election Charles B. Upton and Denver Knuckles were candidates for the Republican nomination for State Senator for the Seventeenth Senatorial District. The official canvass of the vote showed that Knuckles was the winner, receiving 3321 votes to Upton's 3298, a margin of 23.
