In May of 1963, the defendant, then aged seventeen or eighteen years, pleaded guilty to the offense of robbery. He was placed on probation for a period of five years. In March of 1968, upon a petition filed, probation was revoked and a new two-year period of probation was imposed with a condition that the defendant serve sixty days at the State Penal Farm.
