On the night of August 17 and the early morning of August 18, 1969, the most intense storm ever recorded in the western hemisphere, Hurricane Camille, struck the Mississippi and Louisiana Gulf Coast with winds attaining a velocity approximating 200 miles per hour and tides ranging from 15 to 30 feet above normal.
