James Ramsey Sorenson was sentenced, on May 23, 1969, to not more than 10 years of imprisonment for the crime of assault in the second degree. After sentence was pronounced, Sorenson's trial counsel gave oral notice of appeal. May 23 was a Friday. The trial judge refused counsel's request that sentencing be delayed until Wednesday of the following week to enable Sorenson to arrange for a bond to secure his release...
