On 22 May 1967, the body of James Melton was discovered on an isolated road several miles north of Rockingham, North Carolina. Mr. Melton, a Rockingham taxi driver, had been shot four times with a .32 caliber automatic pistol. Mr. Melton's 1961 model taxicab and some money were missing.
