Defendant was charged with murder in the first degree and after a preliminary examination, with the assistance of counsel, on January 9, 1969, he was held for trial. On July 23, 1969, he tendered a plea of guilty to murder in the second degree which was accepted by the court. On July 31, 1969, he was sentenced to a term of life imprisonment by Judge Robert J.
