The defendant, Donald Cowger, pleaded guilty to a charge of armed robbery in the circuit court of Coles County in February of 1968, and he was sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two nor more than seven years. In May of 1969 that court granted his amended post-conviction petition and set aside his conviction on the ground that he had not been afforded the effective assistance...
