MARUMOTO, Justice.

On February 11, 1969, defendant was found by a police officer in possession of a Browning automatic pistol, which was not registered with the chief of police. On the same day, a police detective filed a complaint in the district court of Honolulu charging defendant with violation of HRS § 134-7(b).
