The appellant, Dorothy Williams, brought an action for the wrongful death of Johnnie Lee Williams. She claimed to be his wife by virtue of a common-law marriage.1 The complaint claimed that Johnnie Lee Williams had been killed by the negligent act of police officers acting within the scope of their employment by the county. At the conclusion of all the evidence, the trial judge directed a verdict for all the defendants...
