In 1944 a jury convicted defendant Wells, a prisoner in Folsom State Prison, of possessing a knife in violation of Penal Code section 4502. He was sentenced to the term of not less than five years then fixed by that statute.1 He had discharged his attorney during the trial and conducted his appeal without counsel.
