An indictment was returned in the Court of Hustings against George Calvin Stevens, defendant, charging him with maliciously wounding Alease [Elise] Hicks with intent to maim, etc. Code, § 18.1-65. He entered a plea of not guilty and after consulting with his court-appointed attorney, he waived trial by jury and was tried by the court. Virginia Const., § 8.
