Plaintiff Sternberg, who initiated this suit, lent money to defendant Baxter, a stockholder and officer in the Barrett & Baxter corporation. Baxter issued a number of forged instruments to Sternberg. The corporation is a small, family-type operation. Baxter grew up "as a son" in the home of the founder, Charles H. Barrett, who died prior to the transactions giving rise to this litigation.
