Louis Gene Poynter was alleged to be the father of an illegitimate child in bastardy proceedings instituted in the County Court of Forrest County, Mississippi. A jury returned a verdict at the conclusion of the trial in the following words: "We, the jury find for the plaintiff and assess her damages at $200 as past reasonable expenses for pregnancy, confinement, and medical attention, and the sum of $40 to be paid monthly for 12 years.
