On December 18, 1961, at approximately 11:40 p.m., under unusual circumstances, an accident occurred at about the center of the Greater New Orleans-Mississippi River Bridge which spans the Mississippi River at New Orleans. For some unexplained reason, five strands of rope dangled from the upper part of the bridge superstructure and at the ends of the rope strands was attached a large metal pulley.
