The injury for which compensation was awarded is asbestosis, an occupational disease, caused by exposure to, and inhalation of, asbestos dust.

Swetlik began working in the insulation business upon his graduation from high school in 1932. In 1937, he became an applier of insulation and testified that from 1937 to 1955 he worked "almost full time" for Northwestern, except for brief periods when he worked for three other employers.
