Plaintiff, Joseph Pettus, a longshoreman, was struck by a draft of coffee bags on August 20, 1955, while unloading the S.S. Santa Olivia at the Java Street pier in Brooklyn, New York. As a result of this injury he brought an action against Grace Line, Inc., owners of the ship, alleging that his injuries were caused by the negligence of the shipowner, its agents and employees, and by the unseaworthy condition of the vessel.
