On June 13, 1953 and for a considerable period prior thereto the State of New York maintained a section of highway in the vicinity of Bloomingburgh, New York designated as Route 17. This highway was a principal artery of traffic leading to the southern Catskill Mountains and was heavily travelled particularly on weekends during the Summer season.
