Storied Fort Sumter, South Carolina, now a National Monument, situated on an island in Charleston Harbor, is accessible to tourists and other visitors only by small vessels landing at the island pier. The fort with its appurtenances is in the control of the National Park Service under the Secretary of the Interior.
