RAUM, Judge:

Emil M. and Miriam W. Forster, husband and wife, filed their joint Federal income tax returns for the years in controversy in New York, where they reside. Emil will sometimes hereinafter be referred to as petitioner. The Commissioner determined deficiencies in income tax against petitioners as follows:
