The appellant was convicted of murder in the first degree upon his plea of guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment by the District Court for the Territory (now State) of Alaska on December 3, 1952; no appeal was taken from this judgment. On November 20, 1959, while incarcerated at the United States Penitentiary, McNeil Island, Washington, the appellant filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus attacking the above conviction and seeking immediate release...
