March 16, 1953, Etha Gibford was granted a default decree of divorce from Ronald Gibford. The custody of Lana, aged six years, and Michael Steven, aged five months, was awarded to her "reserving to defendant reasonable rights of visitation and the right to have with him for the three summer vacation months the minor child, Lana." The decree further provided

"... that until such time as plaintiff remarries the defendant shall pay to the plaintiff the...
