On July 2, 1957, South Shore, Kentucky, across the river from Portsmouth, Ohio, was incorporated as a sixth-class city by judgment of the Greenup Circuit Court. The new city had an area of one-fourth square mile (a square, one-half mile on each side), the maximum permitted under KRS 81.040, and a population of 573.
