Until recently the Erie Railroad Company transported passenger traffic on both its main and branch lines into its terminal in Jersey City, New Jersey. From that point, carriage to the downtown area of New York City was accomplished by means of the Erie ferry which plied across the Hudson River between the terminal and Chambers Street, New York City.
