During the night of August 18-19, 1953, the Danish steamship Else Basse, with a cargo of cryolite ore, caught fire and was abandoned by her master and crew at a point in the Gulf of St. Lawrence some 50 miles from Harmon U. S. Air Force Base on St. George's Bay, Newfoundland. Two United States Government vessels cooperated in putting out the fire and in bringing the ship safely into port.
