Harrell was employed as a longshoreman by Southern Stevedoring Company. While working in the tween deck, stowing cargo, he was struck by a 100-lb. sack of corn, which fell from a pallet being brought over the hatch through the use of the vessel's equipment operated by an employee of Southern Stevedoring Company.
