The plaintiff was employed by the state of Washington in the Spokane office of the department of unemployment compensation and placement from June 13, 1941, to the date of his compulsory retirement, June 1, 1953. For part of the time within this period, namely, from January 1, 1942, to November 15, 1946, he was "assigned" on a temporary basis to assist the Federal employment security department.
