The employee, who worked for a bakery as a cook and dishwasher, was also required to bring supplies up from the basement to the bakery. On October 5, 1954, while carrying a one hundred pound bag of sugar up the basement stairs, he felt pain in his right side. That evening, the pains continued and his groin started to swell.
