Defendant was charged in a 17-count indictment with grand larceny in the first degree, in that during 1947 and 1948 he obtained money from five different persons at different times by falsely representing to them that he was a member of a syndicate then engaged in the purchase and sale of Canadian newsprint, and that their money would be invested by him as part of his "quota" in the total capital...
