In September 1953 a report was widely circulated in Philadelphia that a group of children, playing in Fairmount Park, had witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary in a bush near the corner of Fifty-first Street and Parkside Avenue. As a result, tens of thousands of people came to view the bush during the ensuing weeks. A great number of these people left small sums of money at the site...
