Appellant was charged by indictment with the following crimes: Count I, attempted burglary; Count II, conspiracy to commit burglary; Count III, grand theft (automobile); Count IV, a violation of section 12021 of the Penal Code (ex-convict possessing a concealed weapon). Appellant was also charged with two prior felony convictions. The public defender of San Joaquin County was appointed to defend appellant, and appellant entered a plea of "not guilty"...
