The decedent was a volunteer fireman and chief of the local fire company. Early in the morning of August 24, 1953, the decedent went to the cellar of his home to light a gas hot-water heater. An explosion occurred immediately upon his lighting a match. The flames quickly spread up the cellar stairway and into the hall and the living room on the ground floor of the house.
