On September 22, 1952, while lifting a can of milk from the cooler in his employer's plant, the deceased felt a sharp pain in his lower back. He continued to work until September 30th when he left his employment, never to return. His attending physician made a diagnosis of muscle strain but later an orthopedic specialist diagnosed the trouble as a herniation of a lower lumbar disc.
