In 1909 Henry Cosby, then seven years old, was released to the Children's Home Society with the request that the Society secure for him legal adoption. Children placed by the Society were ordinarily placed with the intention that they be adopted, although in this case no statement was made to the Society by the Cheaneys that they would adopt him nor was the placement intended as an indenture.
