This is a petitory action brought by the plaintiffs, children and grandchildren of Joseph Callahan, against the defendant to recover as his heirs an undivided one-half interest in the following described land:

"A certain tract of land situated on the left bank of Bayou Lafourche, about forty three (43) miles below the Town of Thibodaux, measuring two and one third (21/3) arpents front on said Bayou Lafourche by a depth of forty (40) arpents...
