The applicable statutes are secs. 39.45 (2) and 39.37. Sec. 39.45 (2), upon which defendants rely, reads as follows:

"(2) All teachers as defined in this section shall be given written notice of renewal or refusal of his or her contract for the ensuing school year on or before April 1 of the school year during which said teacher holds a contract by the managing body or other proper officer of the school or system in which the teacher is employed....
